SYNOPSIS:
After a scientist is murdered and his prized black crystal is stolen, Michael and K.I.T.T. race to recover the missing other half that would allow the thieves to activate a thermal laser -- a beam of concentrated heat that can cut through anything, including K.I.T.T. However, their investigation is hampered by Elliott, a F.L.A.G. scientist who can only be referred to as a 'nerd'.

TRIVIA:
The Foundation Board of Directors thought that Elliott might one day become a full member of the team. Devon reluctantly gives the scientist a positive review, but the character is never "inflicted" upon them again.
At the conclusion of the episode, Elliott becomes a "real" Foundation man -- he and Michael are dressed identically, and Elliott takes off on his now all-black scooter complete with scanner and "KNERD" vanity plate!
Also during the tag, Michael tries some fishing -- the profession he would eventually leave the Foundation to pursue in the reunion movie KNIGHT RIDER 2000.
Guest stars Tawny Moyer and Steve Sandor previously worked together in an episode of The A-Team entitled Breakout!, which aired in December 1984. Victoria Bass also appears in the episode KNIGHT BEHIND BARS.
SCRIPT TO SCREEN:
Rather than a chemical insulating formula to protect K.I.T.T. from the thermal laser, the early drafts of the story had Bonnie and Elliott develop a special refracting windshield that would deflect the beam for the required 10 seconds.
The script originally had Michael deactivate K.I.T.T. as he went after Gifford, leaving him in further jeopardy when they trained the thermal laser on him.
