Knight Rider Movember Guide

It’s November, and you’ll probably have noticed once clean-shaven men suddenly sporting facial hair. The month of November is now synonymous with Movember, a fantastic worldwide charity movement where men grow moustaches in a bid to raise awareness for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental illnesses. It’s also a cause worthy of the Knight Rider himself – something where every man has an opportunity to make a difference! It’s brilliantly retro: The 1980’s were, of course, the era of hirsute heroes like Magnum, PI, Matt Houston and Riptide; while the star of Knight Rider was clean-shaven, many of the show’s bad guys sported facial hair above the lip.

Below we have a guide to some of the greatest whiskers in the history of Knight Rider, and hope it provides the perfect inspiration to anyone wishing to take part in this year’s Movember! (More details at the end of this article.)

Jackson & Browne (Knight Rider Pilot Episode)

Michael D. Roberts & Bert Rosario

Jackson (Michael D. Roberts) & Browne (Bert Rosario) in the Knight Rider Pilot Episode (aka. Knight of the Phoenix

These two have the distinction of the first ‘taches in the history of Knight Rider, and kickstarted the trend of the moustache signposting shady characters. Jackson (Michael D. Roberts) sports a stylish, early-’80s pencil moustache, while Browne (Bert Rosario) flaunts a chevron. The inherent coolness of their facial hair isn’t enough to prevent their capture by K.I.T.T. however: the car sends the tufted thieves directly to jail.

Useful quotes:

  • “We’ll come another time, and we will be ready!”
  • “The car is mine, and I will do with it as I please!”
  • “Don’t jive me, Brown! If you didn’t say ‘pull over’… then somebody else did.”
  • Harold T. Turner (Short Notice)

    William Smith

Harold T. Turner (William Smith) with Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) in Short Notice

The moustache isn’t just shorthand for a bad guy… it’s also the universal Hollywood signal for membership of an evil biker gang! Short Notice features Knight Rider‘s second bunch of criminal bikers – but brings with it some superior facial hair: Harold T. Turner (William Smith) is the head of the diabolical ‘Satan’s Stompers’, and gives Michael Knight a hard time with the aid of his streetfighting skills and (appropriate) biker moustache. This nasty piece of work almost brings Knight Rider to an end with its first season!

    Useful quotes:

  • “We’re going to watch you tell Tiny how sorry you are for wasting his brother.”
  • “Tell Dirty Bob that I’ll be down there to do some dove shootin’ real soon.”
  • “How long’ve you known my wife?”
  • Boyd Lasalle & Danton (Knight in Disgrace)

    John Considine & Ken Foree

Boyd Lasalle (John Considine) & Danton (Ken Foree) in Knight in Disgrace

Boyd Lasalle (John Considine) was one of the most devious villains Michael and K.I.T.T. ever faced, and this Southern sophisticate wore a ‘major’-style moustache on his top lip. His first henchman Danton (Ken Foree) followed his lead by sporting an evil walrus. Foree and his whiskers returned to Knight Rider the following season in Redemption of a Champion, and Considine would return in the fourth season premiere Knight of the Juggernaut with a full beard!

    Useful quotes:

  • “With your present security rating you couldn’t get a job as a rent-a-cop.”
  • “A treasure hunt off the coast of Haiti. If they find the treasure we’re going to rip them off too.”
  • Photographer (Custom Made Killer)

    Guerin Barry

Photographer (Guerin Barry) in Custom Made Killer

This comic relief character sports a chevron moustache that feels like it wants to evolve into a Salvador Dali. Actor Guerin Barry is also a voice over artiste, and sports a stylish moustache to this day.

    Useful quotes:

  • “Contrast darling! Black on black, a single strand of pearls!”
  • “He probably has a cold.”
  • Mark Taylor & Bloodworth (Knights of the Fast Lane)

    Tim Rossovich & Alan Feinstein

Bloodworth (Tim Rossovich) & Mark Taylor (Alan Feinstein) in Knights of the Fast Lane

These two amoral characters hide behind their evil painter’s brushes. Mark Taylor (Alan Feinstein) is the lead bad guy and owner of the L.A. Cougars football team, and drives a supercar of his own that can give K.I.T.T. a run for his money: The Dagger DX. Bloodworth (Tim Rossovich) is his right-hand-man, cleaning crime scenes, rupturing fuel tanks and starting illegal street races. In spite of their superior facial hair, they aren’t a match for Michael and his former partner, the similarly painter’s brush-sporting Sgt. Jim Courtney (Cliff Osmond).

    Useful quotes:

  • “Push me again and you’re history.”
  • “I’m the Man with a Thousand Lives.”
  • Alex Webster (Not a Drop To Drink)

    Dave Cass

Alex Webster (Dave Cass) in Not a Drop to Drink

Alex Webster (Dave Cass) works for Herb Bremen, a land owner trying to start a range war over water rights. In between setting explosives, brawling with Michael Knight and arguing with his incompetent brother, Webster cultivates an impressive horseshoe – perfect for the Western feel of this episode. Dave Cass returned to Knight Rider two years later (with his horseshoe grown into a full beard) in Season Three’s Knight By a Nose.

    Useful quotes:

  • “Pick up the car! It’ll make a good souvenir!”
  • Tony (Trust Doesn’t Rust)

    Michael MacRae

Tony (Michael MacRae) in Trust Doesn’t Rust

Tony (Michael MacRae) began this classic episode of Knight Rider as little more than an unshaven hobo, but cleaned himself up with the aid of K.I.T.T.’s evil doppelganger K.A.R.R. He kept his distinctive walrus moustache; like Hasselhoff’s Garthe Knight later on, the facial hair helped distinguish this character from Michael Knight (in this case when he was behind the wheel of the Trans Am).

    Useful quotes:

  • “Get us out of here as fast as you can you stupid hunk of tin!”
  • “It’s you and me a-flyin’ down to Rio, with you-o and me-o!”
  • “Okay, K.A.R.R., you want a technician, I’ll get you a technician.”
  • C.J. Jackson (Knight of the Drones)

    Jim Brown

C.J. Jackson (Jim Brown) in the third season premiere Knight of the Drones

Only a mustachioed bad guy could kill an agent of F.L.A.G. Meet C.J. Jackson, murderer of Michael Knight’s predecessor Ken Franklyn, as played by NFL legend Jim Brown. C.J. Jackson is a formidable foe, whether busting out of jail with the aid of Dr. Halston’s Drone car (we think he’d have got out of there eventually anyway), intimidating the feeble Peter Wong (Evan Kim), or seducing sexy Silver Phantom-driving Babette (Eva Gholson). Anything is possible with this Magnum-style chevron!

    Useful quotes:

  • “You know what? You just came out of retirement.”
  • “One thing I’ve learned is that nobody gives anything for nothin’.”
  • This ‘tache-heavy episode also featured an honorable mention from prison guard Carter (Arnie Moore), and a true highlight from…

Eggroll Brother/Karate Twin (Knight of the Drones)

    Al Leong

The Karate Twins (Al Leong, left) in action in Knight of the Drones

…One of the greatest ‘tache-wearing bad guys from 1980’s Hollywood: stuntman and actor Al Leong features in a small role sporting his evil Fu Manchu moustache! The confidence to wear this moustache is supreme… Leong’s Karate Twin not only takes on Michael Knight with his Kung Fu fighting moves, but also attacks K.I.T.T. with his bare hands! He would later face off against The A-Team, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.

    Useful quotes:

  • None. The Karate Twins are the silent type.
  • Lt. George Barth (K.I.T.T. The Cat)

    Jack Starrett

Lt. George Barth (Jack Starrett) in Season Two’s K.I.T.T. The Cat

Lt. George Barth (Jack Starrett) is a man obsessed. He is chasing an elusive cat burglar with nothing more than his badge, his gun, and his copstache. Starrett also appeared in the first season episode The Topaz Connection as the evil Hagen, and later in the fourth season episode Sky Knight, as a shady sheriff. He brought his moustache with him both times, though in Sky Knight it was joined to a beard.

  • “You’re about a gnat’s hair away from being busted for obstruction of justice!”
  • “Was she with you when the lights went out?”
  • Sgt. Wallace (No Big Thing)

    Ted Markland

Sgt. Wallace (Ted Markland) in the first season’s No Big Thing

Sgt. Wallace (Ted Markland) is a corrupt, small-town police officer who works for a criminal judge – think a slightly less buffoonish version of the legal contingent of The Dukes of Hazzard. He and his copstache illegally bust Devon for a false traffic violation involving a hidden speed trap. When the FLAG executive witnesses a brutal prison beating result in murder the hirsute cop finds himself desperately trying to cover up the situation.

    Useful quotes:

  • “You drove through a posted intersection without stopping.”
  • “Your friend was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
  • Buck Rayburn (Custom K.I.T.T.)

    Albert Salmi

Buck Rayburn (Albert Salmi) in the episode Custom K.I.T.T.

Buck Rayburn (Albert Salmi) is the owner of the Longhorn – a customised stretched limo he entered in the Barton Springs Custom and Classic Car Show. To match his luxury car, he wears a luxurious petit handlebar under his nose.

  • “Punch anyone who touches the paint.”
  • “That’ll be the power steering, honey.”
  • Cmdr. Smythe (Custom K.I.T.T.)

    Edward Mulhare & Bernard Fox

Devon Miles (Edward Mulhare) with Cmdr. Smythe (Bernard Fox) in Custom K.I.T.T.

Not a villain, but certainly a threat to our favourite characters, Commander Smythe is a slightly… eccentric… British Army man with whom Devon served during the War. Played by veteran English character actor Bernard Fox, Cmdr. Smythe carries with him an impressive, bristly imperial, completely in keeping with his status. Unlike some of the ‘taches in this list, the imperial was entirely Fox’s own – he sported it in appearances on other shows from The Fall Guy to Bewitched, and Hart to Hart to The Dukes of Hazzard.

    Useful quotes:

  • “Makes you yearn for the War years, eh, Devon? Leading a bristled gaggle of men into battle, the clash of steel against steel, by George!”
  • “You don’t have any kippers, do you?”
  • Wilson (Hills of Fire)

    Vernon Wells

Wilson (Vernon Wells) in Hills of Fire

Wilson (played by Vernon Wells) has the distinction of being the only Antipodean Knight Rider villain, and he brought with him a painter’s brush from the Southern Hemisphere. Wells and his bad guy ‘tache took on Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando prior to their Knight Rider appearance.

    Useful quotes:

  • “If he chases you again, I want you to blow him away!”
  • “We’re big enough to take him out!”
  • Durant (The Scent of Roses)

    Aharon Ipale

Durant (Aharon Ipale) takes aim in the classic episode The Scent of Roses

Durant (Aharon Ipale) chooses to wear a ‘tache as part of his disguise when he assassinates Stevie – now Mrs. Michael Knight! This automatically makes it one of the most memorable ‘taches in Knight Rider history and is burned into the memory of Knight Rider fans around the world.

    Useful quotes:

  • “I’ll bet his life on it.”
  • “He’s seen my face.”
  • “There’ll be no money for any of us until I know that Michael Knight is dead.”
  • It’s not too late for you to join in and get involved! Visit the Official Movember website for more information and details on community projects. This is truly a cause where not just one, but EVERY Man Can Make a Difference!

What is more Knight Rider than that?

Exclusive Interview with Shannon Eric Denton, Lion Forge Comics

    Lion Forge Comics Logo

Artwork courtesy of Lion Forge Comics

With the first issue of Knight Rider now available to purchase we have been privileged enough here at Knight Rider Archives to have the opportunity to interview Knight Rider digital comic editor, senior editor at Lion Forge Comics Shannon Eric Denton.

A huge thanks to Shannon for sparing us the time to answer our questions regarding the latest Knight Rider franchise. Questions and replies below, we hope you enjoy!

    1. Knight Rider Archives: Did you approach NBC Universal to develop Knight Rider and Airwolf as digital comics originally or did NBC Universal come to you with the idea?
Shannon Eric Denton: We originally approached NBC regarding the idea as we were fans of the original shows.
    2. KRA: How did you go about updating the franchise for today’s market and attracting new fans without alienating the original fanbase?
S.E.D.: Both Airwolf and Knight Rider are developed as modern reboots of the original series, so while they incorporate contemporary details and events, fans will still get to enjoy seeing their favourite characters and familiar story lines mixed with new content.
    3. KRA: How many issues will there be in one story arc? Will they ever be released as a collection in digital or hard copy format?
S.E.D.: Our plans are to do an 8-issue run of a story arc, similar to a “season” of a TV show. We do plan to have print editions of the comics depending on the popularity of the IP. Our NBCUniversal titles are already very popular, so I’m sure you’ll see those in print.
    4. KRA: Is there a set date that each issue will be on sale?
S.E.D.: Starting in November, our plans are to have two issues of each out per month.
    5. KRA: We have been asked by fans whether the comics will be available in other languages around the world. Is this planned for the future?
S.E.D.: Right now our content is only to be available for US audiences.
    6. KRA: Did you view any episodes of the show whilst writing the stories? If so were there any favourites or moments? Did any of these influence the characters or storylines of the new comics?
S.E.D.: Since this version that writer Geoffrey Thorne has reimagined is its own continuity I realized it was important to re-familiarize myself with who Michael Knight is and what he’s about.  Watching those classic episodes really helped to do that.  And any episode with a Knight Automated Roving Robot in it was my favourite!
    7. KRA: Will all the characters that become introduced as the story develops be familiar or are there any major alterations to the main characters?
S.E.D.: We’re introducing all kinds of new characters and doing our best to stay true to everyone you know.  That being said it is a re-imagining and takes place in the here and now instead of the 1980s so there will be some changes Geoffrey came up with. However, we’re hoping the original fans feel they’re in the spirit of the original series.  Jason Johnson is killing it on the art!
    8. KRA: Will any characters be introduced that were in spin offs of the show (i.e. Team Knight Rider, Knight Rider 2000) or similar characters based on these?
S.E.D.: At this point no.  It’s really all about Michael Knight and his introduction to K.I.T.T.
    9. KRA: Will any familiar bad guys be making an appearance? A lot of fans will be wondering whether the likes of Garthe Knight or K.A.R.R. will be making a return.
S.E.D.: I would answer that question but a roving robot is staring me down with its deadly laser eye if I answer incorrectly.  I’m going to have to pass on that one for my own wellbeing.
    10. KRA: Will K.I.T.T. have any new capabilities that you can share? Does he still have the same capabilities as the original series i.e. Turbo Boost, Ski Mode, ejector seat etc? Will we see K.I.T.T. have functions like Super Pursuit Mode and Convertible Mode as we see in season 4 of the original show?
S.E.D.: Our new series is an introduction story so the audience will be along for the ride with Michael Knight as classic capabilities are introduced… as well as some new ones! Geoffrey’s cooking up all kinds of fun stuff for our guys.
    11. KRA: Is the new K.I.T.T. as indestructible as he was in the original show or will he be more vulnerable to attack?
S.E.D.: K.I.T.T. will be thrown many challenges that he may or not be able to survive.  It’s a new era and Michael and K.I.T.T. will be doing their best to survive the onslaught that is to come.
    12. KRA: In the first issue we are introduced to Dr. Katherine Beachum. Is Katherine an update on Bonnie Barstow/April Curtis from the original series or will we be introduced to other technicians that maintain K.I.T.T. as the story evolves?
S.E.D.: Katherine is her own character.  We’ll meet others throughout this current story arc that may or may not have K.I.T.T.’s best interests in mind. Luckily Michael Knight will be there to lend a guiding hand.
    13. KRA: In the first issue we were put straight into the action. Will we get to see more of Michael’s back story as the storyline develops? Will he have a similar history to David Hasselhoff’s character in the original series?
S.E.D.: Geoffrey does an amazing job of making you aware of the kind of guy Michael Knight is while firmly establishing that this story really is an introduction to K.I.T.T.
    14. KRA: Something that we would all love to see is a Knight Rider and Airwolf crossover story. Is there a chance this will ever be developed?
S.E.D.: K.A.R.R. told me I have to stop answering questions now… but go to our Facebook page and look for all the latest Lion Forge updates!  Forge On!

Once again a huge thanks to Wonacott Communications LLC and Shannon Eric Denton, senior editor at Lion Forge Comics for sparing us the time to answer our questions and making this interview possible.

Despite official protocol, F.L.A.G. Agent, MICHAEL KNIGHT thinks the one thing the brilliant Dr. Katherine Beachum needs most is a night on the town, away from the lab and her ultra-secret research project. Everything’s going fine until a squad of gun-toting mercenaries crashes their party.

    Don’t miss it!

Knight Rider #1 Digital Comic Review

    Knight Rider #1

    KNIGHT RIDER #1

    Writer: Geoffrey Thorne
    Illustrations: Jason Johnson
    Coloring: Milen Parvanov & Sai
    Lettering: Deron Bennett
    Editor: Shannon Eric Denton

It’s only taken 30 years, but Knight Rider fans can now follow the adventures of Michael Knight in comic form! The 1980’s saw a weekly run in the UK’s Look-In Magazine, and these stories were later collected in a 6-issue series for the Spanish market. Five annuals containing comic strips were also published in the UK while the show was on the air; surprisingly for a show popular with the young, that has been the extent of Knight Rider’s foray in the comic world.

That all changed earlier this year when Lion Forge Comics teamed with NBC Universal, licensing Knight Rider along with other ’80’s properties (Airwolf, Miami Vice) for a series of digital comic books. Here at the Knight Rider Archives we have followed the progress of this ambitious project from the St. Louis-based publisher, and now the time has come: all systems are go. Knight Rider is back.

We open with a series of panels that mimic the opening titles of the original series: the iconic desert shot, the flashing scanner, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, Michael behind the wheel. This is safe territory, we’re back in TV land — but not for long.

There is an early panel with Michael’s face swathed in bandages, but this is not the origin story as we remember it. Michael is on assignment to protect Dr. Beachum, who designed many of the car’s systems for F.L.A.G., but things don’t go as planned. Or do they? From here, the story quickly hits the accelerator.

The art and coloring is superb. Much has been made of the actors’ likenesses, but in comic form — especially rebooted comic form — it really doesn’t make too much difference. Michael is heroic and recognisable. The car, while not a Trans Am, does have all of K.I.T.T.’s trademarks: the almost-smiling red scanner, the futuristic interior, the black finish, the burning rubber. The digital format allows for some fun effects, such as the dash lighting up as the car starts.

Geoffrey Thorne writes interesting characters. His Michael Knight retains certain characteristics that David Hasselhoff brought to the role, yet also feels different. I’m looking forward to seeing what else he brings to these characters (new and old), and their dynamics in this revamped universe.

There is the temptation to want everything from this first edition, which reads like a prologue. We haven’t met the wider cast just yet; Devon appears on the cover art (see above), but not in this chapter — and Michael hasn’t met him in person at this point. K.I.T.T. hasn’t had a chance to express a personality just yet. I want to know more about Dr. Beachum. All will be revealed as the story continues…

It’s going to be interesting to see where this story goes as other recognisable elements of Knight Rider are reintroduced in this new, modern-day setting. Thorne’s first issue is clearly a small chapter in a larger story, and I’m sure it will read well in a collected edition at the end of the current run.

This is going to be a fun ride.

Knight Rider #1 is available for $2.99 per issue now via the Comics Plus App and will be available shortly through the Amazon Kindle Bookstore, Google Books and other e-book stores.

    Lion Forge’s Press Release:

Lion Forge Launches Digital Comic Books Based on “Airwolf” and “Knight Rider” 1980s TV Shows

The First of Five NBCUniversal Properties Now Available for Purchase

LOS ANGELES and ST. LOUIS – Oct. 16, 2013 – Digital publisher Lion Forge Comics launched two new digital comic books today based on the celebrated 1980s TV shows Airwolf and Knight Rider. Lion Forge acquired the licensing rights to the properties from NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products earlier this year, along with three additional properties that are set to launch this quarter.

Airwolf is developed as a fresh take on the original series, which centers around a high-tech military helicopter named Airwolf and its crew, led by pilot Stringfellow Hawke, as they embark on a variety of highly dangerous, international missions. The comic is written by David Gorden (Catalyst Prime: Accel and Catalyst Prime: Quincredible), with Koi Turnbull (Fathom) handling artwork.

Knight Rider, written by Geoffrey Thorne (Leverage, Ben 10), focuses on crime fighter Michael Knight, the character made famous by actor David Hasselhoff, and his Knight Industries Two Thousand (K.I.T.T.), an artificially intelligent and technologically advanced Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Jason Johnson (Wetworks, Godstorm) is on board as the artist for the comic.

“We can’t wait to let fans relive the action-packed experiences of these iconic shows not only as digital comics, but with contemporary events, technologies and other details incorporated,” said David Steward II, founder and CEO, Lion Forge. “We know readers will appreciate experiencing these stories with a modern twist, while still feeling like they’re reliving past shows.”

“It’s always gratifying to see our television properties reimagined in new and unique ways,” said Chris Lucero, director of Global Consumer Products Licensing for NBCUniversal Television. “With exciting artwork that complements updated storylines, I know fans of our shows will enjoy new adventures with these beloved TV icons.”

The comics are available now via the Comics Plus App and will be available in the future through the Amazon Kindle Bookstore, Google Books and other e-book stores.

Lion Forge will also be releasing the first digital issues of popular NBCUniversal properties Miami Vice, Punky Brewster and Saved By the Bell over the next two months.
